What is AFFF ?

AFFF stands for Aqueous Film-Forming Foam. It’s often referred to simply as firefighting foam.

Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) is a type of foam used as a fire suppressant by Fire departments to fight liquid-fueled fires (those started by oil, gasoline, or other flammable liquids).

AFFF are water-based and contain hydrocarbon-based surfactants such as Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), or Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (PFOS). Both PFOA and PFOS have been identified by the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) as “emerging contaminants” known to negatively impact human health and additionally, these chemicals are “persistent,” so they don’t break down after entering the body or the environment.
